One year ago I wrote out my resolutions and posted them online as a way to remind myself to do better. This year I’m attempting the same thing, however in order to start the new year, I have to evaluate the previous one. My resolutions from last year were:

Lose (at least) 36 pounds.

Be more sociable.

Write something at least once a week.

Finally finish some project I have in my to-do list.

Watch every movie and TV show I own at least once.

Read every book I own, at least once.

Listen to more of the music I own.

Budget my money and re-execute my savings plan.

Be more aware of the world around me.

Be a better friend/boyfriend/person.

Get a 4.0.

Really prepare for the job search/market.

Manage my time better.

So how did I fare? Overall I think I did pretty decently, I lost seventy pounds, I’m more social, I manage my time a lot better, I read the news much more thoroughly. I deleted about 50GB after listening to much of it. However, I didn’t finish most of my to-do list, I finished the West Wing and that’s about all. Budgeting never really took off, either did writing weekly. Never got a 4.0. I’m finally getting myself out there now, a year after I said I wanted to.

When writing out my resolutions for this year the first thing I noticed was how many resolutions I had last year. They were broad, and time consuming and a few were unexecuted. This year I sought to have half as many resolutions, but be more direct about them.

Re-Evaluate Myself More Than Once-a-Year

I said I was going to be more direct, this one is obviously broad but it’s the most important resolution I have on my list. I’m a firm believer in “The New Year as a New Start” but when you set goals once-a-year, halfway through the year you’ve either broken them, or forgotten them. My resolution is to be constantly evaluating myself, my goals, and my progress. This blog will help with that evaluation.

Design a Day / Photo a Day

This is how I plan on honing my skills. Each day I will take a photo and design a new piece. I’ll limit myself to spending no more than an hour on each. With my designs I’ll keep myself focused by having a theme every month. Each piece will be posted on one of my two Posterous accounts, which are linked below.

Book Every Two Weeks

Book every Two weeks – I find that I’m much more creative when I’m reading. Instead of saying read every book I’m telling myself to read one every two weeks. I have a feeling this will work out better.

More Energy

I lose all motivation to do anything when I’m tired. If I don’t sleep well, by the evening I’ve given up on being productive and I’m watching TV, or playing video games. My goal is to wake up early, stay energized, keep motivated and end up more productive. Waking up early also entails going to be earlier, no more 2AM movies for me.

Drop 20 More Pounds

20 more pounds? Yep, that’d put me at a healthy 180, and I’d be more than content then.

There we are, my resolutions for 2010, let’s meet back a year from now and see how this year went. Let me know what your resolutions are for 2010, I’d love to hear what your goals are.

Change has been a major theme in my life lately. I graduated college in June, which means for the first time in just over seventeen years I am not in some sort of formal education. There aren’t “seasonal jobs” anymore, there are only jobs. No more homework, no more finals, and sleep has become much more necessary. My friends and I are at a crossroads. We’re adjusting to life outside of school, and for many of them, life far away from home.

Another major theme in my life lately is that of passion. I recently read Gary Vaynerchuk’s outstanding book, “Crush It” (Buy it, it’s worth the $15) and since finishing it I question myself almost daily as to what my passion is. What topic gets me excited? I could say any number of things, but they feel forced. I love animation and motion graphics, but is it my passion? Maybe. Video Production was my major, and I can talk about it for hours, but am I passionate about production? Maybe. I feel that in order to know what you’re truly passionate about, you need to do it. And not do it as a hobby, or as a student, but do it professionally – do it for a living. Many of my friends are off attempting to begin their professional careers. They’re discovering their passions. However, I’m not. I’m still doing it as a student, and it’s not the Job Market that’s preventing me from doing it professionally. It’s myself and my skills.

One of my favorite websites, greyscalegorilla, run by Nick Campbell, has been an immense learning tool. His After Effects and Cinema 4D tutorials have helped further my software knowledge, but it’s what I have learned about the importance of design that has been most significant. While in school I never once thought about taking a design class; nothing about typography, nothing about color theory, not even a design history class. My entire focus was on learning the software and how it works. It wasn’t until a few days ago while reading Nick’s site that I realized how important design is, and how I’m not going to be working professionally until I start to understand design. I could do hundreds of animation projects, but in order for my work to progress, for my work to be noticed, I’m going to need to really understand what I’m doing.

Herein lies more change. This website is an experiment in discovery. It has changed nearly two dozen times, and it is changing yet again, but this time in an attempt to discover my passion. As I journey through my piles of books on design, I’m going to apply what I learn to each post on this website. Jason Santa Maria’s gorgeous website has given me the idea of the “art directed webblog.” Each post will be designed differently, not just as an exercise, but as a study of design. Through this website I hope to track my journey of finding my passion. Through this website I hope to grow as an artist and designer. Through this website, I hope to become a professional.

So here’s to a new direction, a new journey, and new discoveries. Here’s to change.
